I personally have learned three methods for depicting rust in the model railroad hobby. I will hereby explain these methods.
Making rust
Rust with sand
Rust with Rust Texture from Vallejo
Rust with iron dust
Here I coat the surface that I want to rust with wood glue. Then sprinkle iron dust (very fine dust that you get in an artist's painter).
(can be purchased wholesale), generously apply the glue and let the whole thing dry. The surface should not have any shiny spots,
then sprinkle dust on it again. The drier the surface, the better the result. Excess is shaken off and can be used again
be used. The surface is then sprinkled with an acid (also available in the painter/artist trade) and in about half an hour
you can already see how the rust is starting to develop. Simply let it rust for 24 hours.
The result is astonishing.
The acid is not corrosive, but still follow the manufacturer's safety instructions
In this process I use a paint similar to rust and apply it generously to the area that is supposed to rust. Then I sprinkle LITTLE, very
finely sifted sand (0.9 mm grain size and even smaller) into the still wet paint. To dry it then and to speed things up, I use a hairdryer,
so I see the result pretty quickly. I use the sand to create a rough rust to obtain a fair surface. If a small area of sand paint shines through,
you can still use very diluted paint be improved. Let it dry and the result is ready.
Rust Texture by Vallejo is a ready-mixed paint that already contains a few ingredients to make something look rusty.
However, these are only available in one color, quite dark but also very interesting. Simply paint the area with it and with a
Dry with a hairdryer. If you don't like the result, then stroke over it repeatedly until the result is OK.
Attention: with each additional coat the zone becomes darker and darker.
